hi everyone i thought i would kick off a new thread about the neo09 happening in about 20 days now here is a brief driver list for this event

Nitro class

Driver Engine Tag Name
Dave Grunill Ops/radical Fastboy
James Overton Grenade --------
James Price Os speed Jimiprice
John Spencer Grenade --------
Lee Taylor Grenade --------
Neil Burdess Ninja Birdy

Elec class

Jason Anderson Picco

Now the last one confuses me a little as he is running a picco in the elec class and hails from usa any ideas on who he is or if he is runing the event

I will have a laptop on site with internet connection and will upload pics and include a drivers report its going to be a heavy weekend but worth it
caster is getting a good gathering in the uk now with very good support from Anwser-rc so this is my way of representing back to Anwser-rc
and caster racing

Thanks Pitman that would be awesome for our own live coverage :)

Nice to 6 guys get into the event seeing there was a lot of entries waiting for a slot.
Sure Jason Anderson was a typo or put in the wrong class maybe.

Nice to also see 3 Grenades in action ...
We ran a grenade in the first round of our Nationals today and following a great warm up last week, where Lee managed to bump up into the B final, with most of the same guys racing this weekend we had a bad Qualifying and only managed the E Final.

During this final he was taken out twice over 2 large jumps and to add insult to injury was ignored for over 12 seconds by the marshalls (licking their wounds I think) so I made the call to leave him out and see how long he could run on Astro turf, (he was already back down to 9th)

He managed 9 mins 46 secs using a grenade with only half a gallon on it!

Using Dave Crompton DC power fuel you soon see why Dave always manages to stretch to 10 min stops .

On the smaller slick surface at neo we should be ok to get 10 mins without going down in venturi.

Hey guys,

Sorry I was not able to get off for the race. I am still new here in Germany and with it being Easter alot of people had request in prior to me. So with this being the military I do have to stay and do my job over the weekend. I wish I could elaborate more on the duty I will be doing this weekend but I can not. As for racing the Caster I still plan on supporting as best I can. So if any of you guys need help with a dirt set up for the buggy shoot me a messege and I can help you out. I will just have to see pics of the track and see what kind of dirt they are using. Go Caster!

I saw your thread..

Vodafone seems to be the best but none look like they will be mega there.
my vodafone one will get a GPRS signal where my Voda mobile wont. Its a bit different as its built in to my lappy rather than a dongle but I imagine the actual gubbins is the same..

Hi chaps

Its overcast and raining here!
I am on my laptop using a Vodaphone dongle and its only GPRS.

My Virgin (T mobile) phone has 3 g here so if any one has a T Mobile dongle it might be faster access.

There is an unsecured wireless network but it is low strength. :( :)

I will try and get some pics up later.

I am pleasantly surprised at the layout. Its technical but also not as manic as other years, In my humble opinion. 5 big doubles one extra large on in the center of the track looks like it will get ROSTRUM eye level cars.

Camera crews stations are all ready and final prep work is under way.

Its also going out live via the internet at the BBK site from time to time.

Hey guys - 9pm here, just finished masuling with cars and eating pizza!

Its been a good day all round (mostly!) but hey thats what practice is there for. All the guys have been improving and finding speed and set up. Today was just a day of learning the track and ther heats are reseeded over night best on your best three consecutive laps during the day. There have been various niggles, switches and odd and sods causing issues.

Also worth looking at in Electric is Nathan Ralls who I never realised he was racing until I saw him putting the car down before practice. he turned up and got a last minute entry due to drop out having collected a motor on the way to the event!

Fastest of the Caster guys in nitro is Lee Taylor at around 100th but when you look at the competition at the meet its not far off a worlds event.

Graham North in electric has gone "creative" on us and has a novel revision to the Fusion. I think hes trying to make a giant 1/10th scale car.. BUIT he did put his fastest time in using his "innovation"

Funniest thing of the day was seeing Gerd Strange (mr Durango) sprinting from the pits when an esc started to crack pop and bang - he was motoring out of there!

Sorry for the lack of info but photo uploads are too slow and Ive been pitting, messing with cars and stuff all day. Good to be here though.

no couldnt see it but heard about it on the blog.

Serious or not violence should not be tolerated. This is a HOBBY and the sad facts are that to get places you have to become semi professional.

Anyway back to the action.

As Pete says some minor niggles have plagued us all day but from our point of view we are happy with the car and the pace it has showed so far. We have tried a couple of things and while I am still not convinced that 10 minute qualifiers are the way to go, especially when engines are not cheap. I am confident we are in a much better shape for tomorrow.

Armed with a Brand new Futaba radio (he has just driven over 80 miles to collect it) Lee said the Old KO seems detached from the car, so lets see how he goes tomorrow with a new radio set. (what a place to try it) Dohh

It looks like fastboys mod on the shocks is better than standard but as with all "performance" improvements the trade off is a slight weeping of shock oil.

The track is a drivers track. Sheer pace will not win this event. A fair number of places you need to be very careful as its OFF camber" and a tight turn. The big jumps will play a part as the heat seeding might well throw up a slower driver or two , and "going for it" when the jump is not on might well cost some of the quicker drivers a round or two.

We will ty and get you some team photos later tommorow but for now I am finishing this can of carlsberg and off to bed shortly.

And I'm so confused... always thought I was a FORD guy, since I mostly owned ford cars and wanted to be different from the majority around here who tend to be chevy fans. But right now I own a Durango family vehicle, Chevy work van, Mazda work car,... and my two old Fords... 1978 F150 and 1993 Escort GT. And I like the new Mustangs, but my dream car is a Corvette Z06/ZR1.

I glad you said most of us...LOL

some of us were trying to get an engine run in at 11.20 and some guy got stroppy about it so we had to pack up.. Some people surely they realsie we would not be running and engine at that hour unless it was important.

Well we now have two engines we can call upon and as Lee sat 45th after round two overall (with two decent runs) we hope to get one good run out of the three to get a decent final on monday.

This 10 minute qualifiers need looking at its crucifying many of the drivers forcing them to run too lean. even tebo had a splash and dash when he took the last round . many top drivers never completed their last lap.

I think 10 mins are great for quals. It forces you to drive better. And remeber Pit Stops are part of racing. So you must take it easy on the throtle and drive smooth. Also you must spend less time on your roof. It also forces you to tune your engine which again is part of racing.

How many times in NASCAR do you see peps comming in with one or two laps for a splash and go.

Good Job at the race Caster Drivers

All the guys are now on C hub. Lee started on C hub and the last to go across was nathan so watch for more speed from Nathan.

lee was on for a great run in round 5 until he came across traffic and waited for a passing opportunity but a back marker decided to use him as a brake...:) Got taken out 3 times on the last two laps......but I suppose thats racing. Car was dialed out there but we will not be on that early tommorow so we are going softer to make it easier over the bumps.

Oh well off to prep the car for tomorrows finals. With 6 bumping up it should be fun.

Any questions you guys want to ask any of the lads racing over here I will go and ask them.?

Whats the reasoning behind going with the C-hub setup ??

Lee has always liked mega amounts of steering. C hub provides more steering and more consistent steering. The car is night and day different and whilst I can tell you what we do and what works Nathan Ralls is probably our best bet for explanation into the theory behind it.

I know Nathan said like Lee said (after he has stuck it on his Fusion) it goes where you point it , its stable and it hooks in consistently.

We are also running inboard steering with laydown steering servo, ala the version 1 car. We feel it gives us more positive lock without having to compromise on he servo saver. (This track is tight)

so you guys are preferring the taller towers ???

Only John Spencer has run the truggy towers but Lee has blagged them for his final as they provide an increased amount of droop something the Standard car has little of. With a change of camber almost every corner the car should benefit from the increased droop and it should be better over the jumps......of which there are many.....finally it should provide better performance over the bumps by flowing the contours instead of skipping then and catching the back end from time to time.

I'm planning to run a c-hub car this summer myself to compare side by side. I have finally come around to where I like the PB setup for durability, no slop, etc. I have had zero issues with the PB, unlike the broken and stripped knuckles I've had on some other cars in the past. But I want to see what the car feels like with c-hubs.

First of all ...... WOW what a busy weekend!!!

Got to say the weekend was full of up's and downs.. but finished well by making the Elec 8th A main.

Didn't actually manage to finish a run in nitro and the rnd 2 which would have been good 14 lapper i ran out of fuel... So with Pitman wrenching for me it was decided to play with the car.

Truggy shock towers installed all round.... The car was transformed, i knocked 2 sec a lap off my previous best, again small issues during the runs prevented any decent qualifiying. But never the less we now have made a major improvement on the car.
Lee Taylor installed the Truggy towers for his final today and if it hadn't have been for an early problem where he missed 2 laps he would have bumped up. Lee really liked the Truggy towers as the car took the jumps better, drove through the blown out parts like they wasn't there and the car was hooked up in the corners. He managed to improve his best lap by 1 sec.... and was putting these laps in regular.

Elec 8th.... Only managed 1 good run in qualifying after a total nightmare... New car proto Speedo/motor package.. Pitman worked on the car to improve the handling once we got the Tekin RX8/T8 system running at it's best. I bumped up in semi B which was a good run. We still needed more from the car so C Hub was fitted as well as the ZX1.5 front shock tower. Final 1 we had no steering at all and sadly had to run around at the back.. Final 2 and despite a poor start we was much quicker, plenty of steering. This made the car very nervous on the rear and finished 10th.. Final 3 (1st Attempt) Car was changed for more rear traction with the shocks moved in at the rear, Holeshots were fitted and the car was really good to drive... once again major step forwards. Final 3 (re-run) moved the spacers from the top wishbone to push them forward to make the car safer. Again such a small change made a big difference... was running 5th early on keeping Tyler Vik at bay and edging away... but after a few laps and a good start a drive pin broke.. end of!!

All in all it was a good, stressfull at times weekend. Plenty of improvements made to the cars, Nitro and electric. Thanks to Lee (Pitman) for all his wrench time, Pete (Answer RC) for all his hard work and pit man skills, Andy/Lee Taylor (Don't forget setup sheet for me!!!), Randy Pike and Jim Campbell from Tekin for all there help and advice...

Off to relax now with my son and wife....

Yes thats the way. The reason we like it is that it gives a "solid" connection to both wheels and clears the servo horn better than running it upright in our opinion.

Caster 2009!!

The 1st one you all need to do is the front body post mount. We have turned up some delrin so the body post is connected to the front steering brace. This means the body does not split as easy. We ran the mark 1 body shell for 3 days at neo 09 and it lasted. This is one of the most aggressive tracks we ever race on. The problem with shells is when you go too thick on the material they shatter and too thin they split. This mod helps stop the splitting for longer.

Not yet but I will in the week I am just a bit blasted now. Competing against giant factory teams drivers is hard work....lol Good thing we had a cracking group of guys. Its interesting that the team is not just about winning but improving what we have for little outlay.

Just sad Lee could not get out for his final in time. Still with Adam Drake not coming over he still remains (as far as I know) the only Uk driver to have beaten The Drake on Uk soil (or astro as it happens) :p"ka

04-14-2009, 04:34 AM
Hi guys sorry I was not able to keep blogging and posting all weekend I really wanted to keep everyone uptodate as it happens but with no signal i could not

So here it is the full story

I arrived friday morning to find most of the team pitting in the corner of the main hall working away on there cars this is the first time we had all come together to work as a team the certainly looked the part and fitted in well with the other big teams in attendance.

On arrival most of the drivers had already switched the the C hub setup because over the lap it felt more consistant.
Decisions were made over tyre choices with driver trying different brands from 6mik's to panthers to proline's the double d's were quick but fell away after 7 minutes the revolvers crimefighters or bowties not even working at all so most drivers went on to jconcept brands most were struggling to find grip to put good times down not sure if anyone tried any caster/vp tyre's

So now it was just down to putting down quick times and coming up with a great setup.

It's true I have not got on with the front end of the caster from my droop thread I started

So I convinced spenny to try the truggy front tower due to more mounting locations and and a more inclined front shock to get more turn in without loosing the rear and this proved to be the hot ticket with the C hub in aswell and the times started to tumbled only problem was we only had 1 set of towers between 7 cars so some drivers had to make do with either the standard tower or short towers and adjust the setup

Most of the caster drivers just had plain rotten luck one driver had blown 2 engines ( not grenade ) trying to make 10 minutes during qual without pitting to speed things up other drivers had stupid things go wrong from a loose grub screw to throwing a Cvd pin to a split pressure line or a flame out.

got to say the car worked pretty flawless to be honest with only 1 whisbone broken and a suspension eyelet.

over the corse of the weekend all the caster started cutting down there lap times and the caster with the truggy towers had knocked a staggering 4 seconds a lap off previous time to put the car 1 second behind the times of the top 20 guys so it was a awfully close event

but the final saw us again have bad luck with spenny running in the A electric running in 7th and then throwing a rear cvd pin which was a shame really as i had spent the previous night from 7pm until 2am wrenching on the car making sure everything was set right and the cvd was the only thing i didnt check doh.....

but then disaster again

our highest place caster driver in nitro again running the truggy towers didnt even make the grid again due to a cvd pin catching on the C-hub we went out 2 laps down but the times were quick quick enough to bump into the next main

but it wasnt to be...

All in all a good weekend for Caster even though we were still drinking at 5am two consectutive nights the team pulled it off and got some good results all the best drivers from Europe, Asia, and America were in attendance so it was a very tough field.....

I will upload pics and video asap

cheers Pitman

and we used the alloy c-hubs although the hub insert could do with being 1-2mm longer one hub had the bearing offset from each other so the shaft would be really stiff so I ground some away to bring the bearings back into aglinment was worried about taking too much away and causing the bearing to wobble

I cant decide if G is some looper scientist or on the verge of a breakthrough.
His invention nearly made one hardcore rallycross guy vomit though.

Is it an invention G or a set up technique?

I know they have a allow C-hub but what about the knuckle? The part that the axle goes through. Did you use the stock plastic ones?

Nope. I have yet to see one break but we have always run ally knuckles on our other cars .

They are made by castor for another car apparently. I was that confident on the C hubs I purchased 6 sets and 3 sets of knuckles............not many left now LOL

So it is sounding like the c-hubs is the way to go. Ha

Well for us yes. But you still need to look at the Mugen MBX 6 to see they still run pivot ball and to see Elliot boots to see how quick it is.

I am not convinced its either or just yet. My feeling is that pivot ball is kinder to new drivers. Also Lee like mega amounts of steering. On this track it was essential but on others it might not be so critical.

Pete has already suggested we need back to back tests to see how things go.

The c-hub gives much quicker turn in and it feels much more agressive. I am used to 1/10th electric so I prefer a more responsive car. I let a few guys drive my car and they said it was "twichy" now compared to the PBS.

i have plenty steering in fact i could with less :) You can always the EPA to get less. But in your case it might be better to stick with Pivot ball. Lee tells me it makes the steering more consistant though.

Lee has always liked mega amounts of steering. C hub provides more steering and more consistent steering. The car is night and day different and whilst I can tell you what we do and what works Nathan Ralls is probably our best bet for explanation into the theory behind it.

I know Nathan said like Lee said (after he has stuck it on his Fusion) it goes where you point it , its stable and it hooks in consistently.

hiya all only just found the forum.

the c hub front end has been run twice now by myself. on both occasions i have found it to be more consistent through the turn rather than having the on and off power snatch that the pbs gives whilst losing mid corner. c hub also gives more steering ie you use what you need rather than all and hope its enough. i have run it on the electric and the nitro car now with the same results on both. i have also tried different shock towers on the front as the kit nitro one doesnt seem to give enough droop. for me tho i run the electric front tower as it is shorter and give some dremel love to the wishbones and hubs on the front to get even more droop. hope this helps. i will sort out a setup and pics soon to explain better?&^
