I'm picking up a new body to paint just for giggles and I'm wanting to go with kind of a carbon-fiber look. I think I read somewhere that people use that rubbery shelf paper stuff to get the pattern, you know the kind that looks like mesh? Anyway, how do they get it to stay inside the body while they're painting it? some kind of low-tack adhesive maybe?

There in lies the problem. It's a simple job to do a flat surface, but doing the inside of a body with the curves etc is not so easy.
If you are using an airbrush, it works pretty well to shoot it in sections, being careful to keep the pattern looking good. It really doesn't have to be perfect to look pretty good.
I like to use a darkened silver for the first layer, then use a dark charcoal or black to the second coat.
Here's one I did with the drawer liner stuff... http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t284/teamfusionracing/?action=view¤t=yellowbad8.jpg

Fusion, that looked damn good. I work with carbon fiber all the time and it's amazing, that almost looks like the real deal lol. And Hak, how much would you charge? That is, how much would you charge to make it look good :D I'm talented enough, I was a graphic design major in college, but I don't have an airbrush :(
I was also thinking of doing a WWII bomber kind of look. You know, with the riveted panels and a 40's style pinup girl ?&^

I only do spray can painting...However I am better than Cam....
That would be sweet. You have to do it now.

Which one?
I'm the same way yhough, rattle cans r us. I need to invest in another airbrush so I can do some nice ones, but I'd probably end up hanging them on the wall in the garage or something rather than trashing them at the track.

Yeah I like that one, too. Good choice. Classic. I actually had the idea last night to combine the two and have the riveted panels painted with different areas that look like they're tearing away to reveal the carbon fiber pattern underneath. It'd probably be a pain to get it to look decent with rattle cans, but it'd be the cat's azz if I take my time and do it right.

You might want to talk to BigC about how to get the carbon fiber look that you want. I've seen this body in person and it looks awesome!
