Everyone says to use an air compressor and it works to an extent unless you're a tad anal =) . I still see dirt particles in there.
Yesterday I sprayed ethynal alcohol in the engine (not inside the engine). Good or Bad? What do you guys do for good cleanings?

I wash my motors with a good automotive degreaser and a old tooth brush.
Just make sure you close or block teh exhaust and carb openings.
after i rinse with warm water and spray teh engine with WD40.
to displace water and then give it a good wipe down and blow of with the compressor.
If dirt is stubborn i will strip motor into paices and wash thoroughly before assembly make sure everything is clean and blow off with compressor and then lube bearings etc as i assemble.
I use synthetic 5w30 motor oil to lube and as a after run oil.

In a pinch (or if there's just some baked on muck) I'll hold my truck up on it's side with the head pointing slightly down and shoot a little fuel into the head (plug is still in of course) to loosen whats in there, then hit it with the compressed air. Have to be careful tho, don't want to get fuel on your brakes, really makes um sloppy :)

You guys see anything wrong with ethynol? It really did a good job. Engine looks brand new with only a few squirts. Dries up really fast too.

Never tried it.
To add tabacco pipe cleaners are ideal for cleaning in between the fins on the engines head.

That fuel thing I do is only if I'm out racing, if I'm at home I'll use a Qtip or something to loosen it up and then compressed air to blow it out.

Yeah ethanol works great. Too bad I won't be needing it soon. ;) hmmm, actually, I may still need it for my electrics. Thing dries up faster than the daily bird doodoo waiting for me at the parking lot.

ethanol sounds like it may become costly just as a cleaner... how about denatured alcohol, that's my next best friend :)

Andy,
Sure thing! Purchase yourself a sonic jewerly cleaner and a liter of WD40.
Place motor (no clutches, springs, bearings, exhauts) into cleaner and fill with WD40 and power on your jewerly cleaner.
Let it do its magic.

somple green works just as well and is cheaper.
Can get it in bulk inside wal-mart by the automotive.
we use it to clean all the bearings

I ask because I already have one but was not sure if we should use WD or water and having used it I am not sure if it really does get things clean......I used to have to do the xray bearings after every run and it did clean them up sufficiently but I was never convinced about the engine I cleaned using it!

some guys would use power parrafin or methylated spirits in a jewelry bath.
also quality automotive degreasers work well and is not harmful to the cleaning container.

Dave D and Razz,
mineral spirits and simple green are pretty cheap but with this jewerly clearner it warms the fluid so I sort of have a double whamy. Clean and fortified the part. Oh I do this to the arms and bearing as well.
$16 1 gal of wd-40
$3 32oz simple green
$7 64oz spirits
I used about 12oz of wd-40 yesterday to clean an entire car. Half gallon of warm water and automotive soap. to wash and rinse everything and then wipe dry and then dis-assemble and put into wd-40 bath :).
Needless to say the car I clean looks brand new.
