Here is how you fix the bump steer in the ZX-1R, what we are doing is shiming the Akerman plate up 3mm. 1st thing take old screw's out and replace them with new screws and get 3 1mm washers.

Next put the washers under the akerman and stack them, like this, and don't forget to locktite the screw's, that's it bump steer is fixed.:D

Cool... nice pics, thanks!
Stuff like this is will have to be "stickied" once the site is too big to find things.

I do not understand how that fixes bump steer? What does raising the ackerman plate do?

Its move's the angle of the arm up. and then you have a akerman plate that is like the king headz one for the Mugen Mbx5 is.

alternative is just to make the bush in the saver arms a bit thicker to raise the ackerman plate.

And that would be a job for mikey It would probably be able to be programmed into the cnc machine I would guess

So what's a good starting set-up for the zx-1 rtr on tight track? Assuming it hasn't been posted yet

yup we will come up with a new one, so it will work just fine
and thanks for the tips, i think this is also helping the Caster racing to grow and improve faster....^_^

I just love the fact that you are willing to listen to what is needed over here and then make changes. If we get the momentum going like it has so far, Caster Racing will be as common of a name as Losi or Associated. It will take a while, but we will get there.

Are you guys going to post anywhere when you come out with new designs or upgrades besides having to look up parts and see if anything is new?

It depends on what surface you are running on but a good starting point woudl be 573 diffs 50wt front 45wt read 2 degree toe in back antisquat up caster all the way forward #2 in tower and inside in arms and 2point2 swaybar up front and 2point9 swaybar in rear if you got them

Guess this newbie is going to have to figure all that out. I did get the oil weight part :)

thanks I'll try that and see. The surface is hard with a sandy loom in the sweeper. I had the car on the track last year just for fun and didn't jump well. I race sedans so this will be very new for me.

Yes, the first forum at the top was supposed to be for that. When I get time, I will shuffle all the threads into their appropriate sections. So that is where major announcements will come from. I am pretty sure I can send out info to every customer/forum user through e-mail....haven't gotten that far yet. Still uploading pics.....:D:D:D

I messed with this mod last night... and noticed it makes the steering rack hit the upper arms at full droop. But, I don't have shocks on the car right now, so maybe it has too much down travel.
Anyone have issues with this?
I decided to just add 1-2 washers for now. I did also try to use a swivel ball (hollow with a screw through it) from the rear upper link because it raises the link a lot compared to the stock ballstud. But it doesn't allow the link to swivel near as much as the ballstud. So it binds at full droop.

i think if all the cars have all crazy super full drop, i think all cars will end up a issue like that, come on guys, there is a limitation ....^_^

A little that why I put the washers on both of my car's.

I am thinking of doing the opposite on the k8t. Check out the thread I made of k8t steering questions.

Just wondering why you guys are concerned about bumpsteer. It is just another tuning option. I like having bumpsteer personally for when my car is squating and the CG is lowered and I get back some of the steering I have lost due to that.
I just read that it was a "problem" when in fact I use bumpsteer and you can just shim the amount you want on either the ackerman or the knuckle arm to gain or remove some.

You say you get back some of the steering when car is squating and the CG is lowered when you have bumpsteer but if you eliminate the bump steer you get that same good steering all the time, not just when your car up front is squating under braking and such.

I think that you didn't understand what I was saying.
When you lower CG for whatever reason you loose the distribution of weight. This usually, depending on where the weight is lost and gained, can decrease steering or increase steering.
I like to have semi-agressive steering due to the fact I come into corners pretty hot and want to get out of the corners ASAP. The tracks I drive have corners on landings of jumps. So, bumpsteer adds some aggression back when the car squats and CG is lowered.
When you get rid of the bumpsteer you won't have the steering all around as you say. Weight transfer plays a huge part in steering. Most of the setup changes on cars is to change how and when weight transfers and bumpsteer just kicks the inner tire out more for added toe out and keeps the outside tire more planted.

hmmm... I just thought I always noticed the outer tire not turning in as much because of it. Maybe I was wrong. My bad.

It could be your track width setting. I run mine almost as narrow as the car allows.

i think you are so right , i think i got to try this out with this bump steering option,
as i do know that, that is something based on how you drive the car to cope with the setting , as i know then you do have bumper steering, when you out of the corner, and pull full throttle, the car will pull, and make it straight, but of course, when you in to the corner is a bit slow, so that is something to adjust it, so you can also have fast in corner and out corner at the same time.

You took the words right out of my mouth. That is exactly what I was trying to say for the reason I do not like bump steer.

Setup for r/c cars is all preference. I guess I just see people talking about bumpsteer being a manufacturers defect and it is not. If you ever competitively raced 2wd buggy you know that bumpsteer plays a large factor in how a car responds in certain areas of tracks. The 1/8 buggy is hard for some people to feel the difference due to the different driving styles you can have with this class. Some will notice due to their driving style.
I advise people to take setup changes with a grain of salt. Even when I'm the one giving the advice. It is all preference and what happens to work for you.

I was looking at this thread again and was wondering that on the K8T some of us put washers underneath the ball joint on the ackerman to lower the ball and arm to get rid of bump steer but you are doing the opposite on the buggy, that would raise the arm up and I would think make it worse than what it is? One guy (do not remember) used the RTR ball joints on the ackerman plate which are longer and lowered the arm which is what I did. What is the difference between these 2 mods?

I use the taller RTR balls on my outer arms, i found it made the car a bit less aggressive in the steering department.

sorry pic was taken with my Cell phone.
At the time when i asked Mikey the reply was that they didnt want the RTR kits to be too sensitive to steering hence why they used the longer ball.

I put those same ones on the ackerman only. To lower the ball like on my K8T will try it out today.

Just put a small spacer underneath both you ball ends of your steering turnbuckles to make you steering turnbuckle level with your lower front arm. you may have to use longer bolts.

Here is a pic. You have to do it to both balls on each side. Ackerman ball and knuckle ball.

Yes it is with all of them. I would not call it a issue, just a preference. Alot of guys run it stock. I do know the Mugen has HUGE bumpsteer compared to the ZX1-R and people run it as is but I like the mod better than stock.

I run (2) 3mm spacers between the rod end and the ackerman. And the same between the front upright and the rod ends. To take out the bumpsteer u need the have the turnbuckles parralel to the front suspension arms at full droop.
