Now that the introduction is over, I will start to discuss the rebuild/refeash of my K8T for the 5th and 6th of Nov.

This morning I began to tear the truck apart to put in fresh diff and shock oil and to repair/replace anything broken or striped. I also wanted to inspect all the plastics for cracks or signs of wear. I am just starting so I have not cleaned the parts yet, will probably do that tomorrow. Here is what I have done so far:

http://i699.photobucket.com/albums/vv353/Senters01/IMAG0011.jpg

I also plan to install HITEC 7954 servos (throttle/steering), lipo batt., and dynamite pro throttle linkage kit.

When I took the truck out last I ran 35 weight oil all around. For my track that seemed a little stiff. For the rebuild, I will run 35 up front and 30 in the rear.

For the diffs I am going with 5k/10k/3k. Ride height will be set at 38mm front and 40mm rear. I will run 2* toe out and 2* camber in front and 3* toe in and 2* camber in the rear.

Sein
11-01-2011, 04:58 PM
Not yet. It has been raining all morning, so I just went to the gym. Now the sun is starting to poke out and I think I will be able to burn a few tanks :). Its only 12:00pm right now as I write this; so, I still have plenty of time. The track is only a 12min drive from my house.

Sein
11-01-2011, 10:48 PM
I was able to take her out today but it did not go so well. I put her down and began running my first tank. I immediately noticed something was not right. The truck was not putting the power down properly and I could hear the dreaded diff sound. So I pulled her off the track and checked the rear diff, it felt and looked great. I put her back together and again, loud diff noise and I had crazy snap oversteer. I figured I would quit already because I knew something was wrong, but before I left, I decided to check the front diff and there was the problem. The front ring gear was ground down and could not mesh properly with the pinion. Now I know why I had crazy oversteer; I was driving a rwd truggy with a .28 in it :).

I saw an upgraded ring and pinion gear on the site where we place orders, and those gears are straight cut. I think I will get those for the front and rear diffs but I will not be able to get them in time for the race this weekend. I have no choice, I must finish the season out with the losi and I will just start fresh for 2012 with my Casters.

The helical cut gears are the best, BUT there are a few things to keep an eye on during break in:

I know I had a thread on here somewhere about the CORRECT shimming of the diffs, but I cant find it YET!

Basically, 1 tank, check the diffs. 3rd tank, check again & shim IF needed. 5th/6th tank, check 1 last time & your done!

Just want an EXTREMELY SMALL amount of feelable play in the Helical cut gears. IF you can move it, it's too lose!

If your f8t has the BIG center spur thoses gears will not work.

Sein
11-02-2011, 12:12 PM
I have the small spur. As a matter of fact, the helical diff gears are what are installed on the truck already. The front was just too worn and my engine made sure it finished it off. I'll just replace it.

The race is over and I had a blast but I did not finish too well. In the truggy main my throttle servo went out 5mins into it. I got hacked really bad on the start which put me in last and I was able to work my way up to third and was reeling in second. Oh well, in buggy, I flamed out at the start and that put me in last. I never really found my rhythm and ended up finishing in the back of the pack. But overall, I still had a blast and had a couple of decent qualifiers.

This is a few days late but for the month of November I did not race my K8T. I did however order the parts I needed to fix the diff issue I found. The truck is now ready to race.

At the present moment I am transitioning manufactures. I still have the buggy and truggy that need to sell.I have sold my DX3S and will be ordering a new DX3R pro to go with my K8T/ZX1.5R vehicles for 2012. About a week ago, I finish my custom upgrade rc order to get my shirts and sticker kits.

For the month of December I probably wont be doing any racing either as everything is just coming together. Once I receive my items from upgrade I will take a nice team picture and show everyone my new look for 2012. Everything is moving slowly but it is moving :D

Yesterday was a very successful practice day. I was able to get to know the truck a little and make quick adjustments to her at the track. The handling and steering on this truck is unreal. The K8T is very responsive to every little input you make while steering. Right now, I have to drive slower because of this; however, once I get use to it, I will be able to run it faster.
I posted my video in the video thread but I'll put it here also.

This truck is simply amazing. I feel a lot more comfortable driving it and I am beginning to push it kind of hard. I feel my biggest downfall right now is consistency. I keep making small mistakes but trying to keep pace and it turns into a big mistake. I just need more stick time.

This coming up weekend is the beginning of our new season. My goal for this race is to just qualify for the Amain and finish it. Anything else would be a bonus. :) Hopefully I am able to get one more practice session in before the race this Sunday...

Glad you like it. Now you are beginning to understand the Caster reputation and why it is important to spread the word of who we are and what we do.

Sein
01-10-2012, 07:02 PM
This past Sunday was a nice day of racing, and it turned out to be a nice day to learn as well. During my practice sessions, I was not able to keep track of my lap times because my track does not have the timing system on for practice days. I did feel I would be a little of pace but I just did not know how much. In the first qualifier, I could not keep up at all. My off power steering was to fast and I could not get on the throttle because I kept over-steering. I ended up finishing my first qual in last place but it was okay, I can only go up from here ;).

http://i699.photobucket.com/albums/vv353/Senters01/IMAG0104.jpg

So, as soon as I jumped off the track, I began to change my diff oils. I wanted to notice a difference so I was not conservative. I went from 5f 10c 3r to 10f 10c 7r. Next qualifier came around and it was time to test her out. The truck felt much better, and I noticed I could get on the power earlier but it still was a tad bit to loose in the rear. I finished in 4th out of 5 trucks. But I did see an improvement in my fastest lap.

http://i699.photobucket.com/albums/vv353/Senters01/IMAG0103.jpg

Quals were now finished and it was time for the main. I ended up qualifying for the Bmain, but I could win it, I would get the bump to the A.

http://i699.photobucket.com/albums/vv353/Senters01/IMAG0105.jpg

http://i699.photobucket.com/albums/vv353/Senters01/IMAG0106.jpg

After the second qualifier, I changed my rear diff oil from 7k to 10k and was mentally preparing for the main. At the start of the main, within the first few turns, the truck felt way more consistent. I finally felt like I could drive her :D. I started in 2nd in the Bmain and on the first lap I was ridding the race leader hard. I could finally push the truck at the pace I needed, and could really feel a difference in how she responded. I knew I was going to win this race. As it would turn out, I was impatient and tried to force a pass. It ended up on my lid and 1st place moved about a half lap ahead of me. Because the truck felt so good, I caught up to him fast and was once again ridding his tail. I noticed my truck started to sag in the rear a lot and it seemed I was bottoming jumps hard. One of my rear shock screws backed out on me. So, I just pulled the truck off the track and called it a day. But I learned a lot and it will only get better. My wife had to leave before the main but I got some video of the quals and will post that up soon.

Well, it about 7:30am and it's a nice 70* out here, so I think it is time to get some more practice in. I have a new setup I'll be working with and will post that up after the day is done. Today will also be my first run with the new Radiopost TS401 system. I am very excited!

I had a good day at the track, and I am gradually improving with my truck. I am not quite finished with the setup, but as soon as I am I will post it up. Yesterday, I was doing some maintenance on my truggy while I was assembling my buggy. I had a little organized chaos going on.

Last Sunday I ran my zx1.5r for the first time, it felt great! I can't wait to race it next month. There are a few small parts I need to replace but overall the buggy feels awesome!
Next time out, I'll try and get some video footage. For some reason the buggy feels easier to drive than my truggy. However, the next vid I post of me driving my truggy, I believe, everyone will notice a big difference in how I drive it. :) A few guys at the track noticed.

I will have to post a pic of my buggy and truggy together soon. Maybe after I install my trick parts screws. :) The body is a Proline Bulldog for the RC8 with proline wing.

I had a good day today at the track. I did not finish on the podium, like I wanted, but my K8T is officially dialed. Now, I can focus on the buggy. With it being only my 2nd time running it, I felt I did pretty good; but I have a lot of setup work to do on it though. Will update with full race report and video some time this week.

Just posting my race info from the February results page:

Last Sunday we had a decent turn out for round 2 of the TRCC Championship points series. First race of the day was nitro buggy. I was kind of unsure how the buggy would handle being that I only had a brief run with it the week prior. 1st qualifier I got a DNF; the clutch separated from the spur and it was free-revving. Next qual, I finished and ended up qualifying 5th in the A; but I had a small problem, my brakes were too strong and they would cause extreme lock up on the front and rear ends. I adjust them and felt prepared for the main. Once the main started, I was making a lot of mistakes, and I kept over shooting turns. Yep, I took too much out on the brakes and now it was barley scrubbing speed. But after about 5minutes in I began to settle down and adjust. I ended up finishing 4th in buggy and, for our first time working with each other, I was happy.

My truggy felt great all day. First qual, I had a small problem :o my TX battery died. 2nd qual ran decent and started in 5th on the grid. I had a really bad start, and within the first 2mins of the race I was being lapped by the top three :(. Because it was still early (18mins to go) I did feel I could get back into the race. There are only a couple of drivers at my track that will pit at the 10+ minute mark and I am one of them. Everyone one else comes in at 7 to 9 mins. This meant they would need two stops but I only needed one. This was where I would come back. The plan was working great; I moved into the fourth spot and we were still under the halfway point. By the time we reach 10mins I had caught up to 2nd and 3rd, they were battling. I was just going to wait for them to hit their second pit stop, and I would get a podium finish. But there was a problem, earlier in the race, a truck was on his lid right on the downside of a double. I hit that truck with full momentum and I think that cracked my shock rod end. It would end up braking on me with about 8 min left in the race and I had to pull out. Caster will get'um next time!

Consistency is very important in on road.
Also the setup on the car has to be perfect or as close to it to get the level of consistency and speed to compete at the front of the grid.
Im sure once you get the hang of it you will enjoy some onroad action :)

What an epic day of racing we had today. I got my first Amain podium finish at TRCC raceway in the 1/8 buggy class. Last Sunday was round 3 for our local championship series. It was a very cloudy day and the rain was coming on and off. Because of the rain we were only able to run one qualifier and then the main.

1/8 Buggy
My qualifier only had 5 racers and 2 of them had problems. I made a setup change to the buggy since the last run but had not driven it yet. She felt really good but I needed to get used to exactly how it reacted to certain inputs. The three of us fought pretty hard for TQ bad I ended up finishing 3rd. This put me in the fourth spot on the starting grid for the A main.

The main went great. I felt connected with the buggy (thanks Radiopost) and we were moving pretty good. I jumped into 2nd position and challenged 1st a few times, but my mistakes got the best of me on this one. I was able to finish in 2nd place for the main and this is my first podium for the 2012 season. It is also my first podium with my Caster ZX1.5R in only it's second race!

The guy who beat me is the guy who always beats everyone at my track. He is the one who sets the bar and we try to keep up. This was the first main that I finished the race on the same lap as him. To top it off, I was only 4 secs behind him. The racer who once seemed unbeatable is now in my sights, and I hope to continue to improve until I am able to win.

I know all my current equipment plays a big part in my current success. Big thanks to Caster Racing for a great buggy, Radiopost for the crazy response of the transmitter to receiver while having the perfect feel, Trick-Parts for holding my riggs together and making them look good, and TRCC for being my local hobby shop to keep me running successfully.

1/8 Truggy
During warm up for the 1st qualifier, one of my cvd pins came out. I did not get to qualify and would start the main at the back of the pack. When I fixed my cvd, I was rushing and did not bolt my diff case all the way down on the chassis. This ended up causing me problems and I could not finish the main.

The truggy felt great and I love my current setup on it. Before the next race I will be combing through everything so this does not happen again.

I have a servo start glitching on me during the warm up for the first qualifier for buggy. I ended up not qualifying at all and a buddy lent me a servo so I could race. I won the B main and bumped up to the A. Started off well and ended up 5th because of a flame out due to running out of fuel with 1 minute left. Still had a blast!

Because I was working so hard on getting the buggy dialed my truggy suffered. I tried running a 6mm carb insert before the 1st qual to see how it would run. That was a very dumb move and my truck ran like crap. Second qual I could not get pass the hackers and that put me in the B main. Had a rough start in the B and could not recover to get the bump up spot. I just had a really off day. Overall, I still had a lot of fun and cant wait to do it again.

The servo was a Hitec 7954. After it comes back from warranty, I will sell all four of mine and go with radiopost servos.

For on-road, I have not had a chance to practice yet but I hope to this weekend. I finally soldered and installed and my electronics and batteries; so, she is ready for the track. I cant wait!

Yesterday, I got a chance to really run the engines I purchased from Triton RC. I have the S852 and the Z852. I was able to do a comparison with both engines in my truggy with the same fuel, gearing, and plug. For this track, I really preferred the power of the Z852 over the S852. You can tell an immediate difference in the RPMs by the sound and pitch of the engines.

Here is a vid of the two. The first part of the vid (S852), I am on the ground recording while a friend was driving my rigg. The second part (Z852) is a view from the drivers stand and there was only one other car on the track.

This will give you an idea of the differences between the engines.
