Anyone ever notice that when the front suspension is at or near full travel (arms hanging down) that the steering does not turn as much from left to right, and when the arms are almost level the steering is much sharper?? If you notice and look at the tie rods and lower the suspension slowly that when the tie rods get at a steep angle it pulls the wheels away from it sharpest turning point.
I noticed on my kyosho ST-RR that the tie rod balls on attached to the ackerman plate are spaced down and lower than on the k8t and on my kyosho the steering stays the same even if the arms are up or down, steering does not change and my ST-RR turns on a dime.
I was wondering if I were to take washers and put between the ball joint and the ackerman plate to lower the ball if it will keep the steering as sharp regardless of where the suspension travel is. What do you guys think. I think I will try it and see.
I am saying this because I noticed on the K8T when I hit the throttle in the turns and the front end lifts up the steering goes away a little. I think it can turn MUCH SHARPER with the idea I said.

yes vnmsgt ...
My solution is to add the small spacer ....

Hmmm... This is just he opposite of what we are doing in the buggy, to get rid of bump steer.
Does this make the truck have more bump steer/make it worse?

Yes it is the opposite but you lose a ton of steering with the front suspension at full droop when accelerating in a turn if your front end comes up . I have not tried it so I cannot say if it will work but that is how the ST-RR is from the factory.

Well I just put a nut as the spacer to lower the ball from the ackerman plate and it works! I let the suspension hang down and the wheels now turn lock to lock freely regardless of where the suspension is. Should make a big difference hopefully accelerating in mid corner of the turns and out of them. Here is a pic of what I did like Zigzag too.

Noted
I have some of the longer ball studs from the old RTR buggy that was taller so no need for the spacers :)

Got a new redesigned (based off older design) ackerman plate from Cam this week and is supposed to give you more steering and is thicker where the steering turnbuckle ends bolt to it so it it will not crack or break. Just turning the wheels I can see a difference on how the wheels turn and pivot. Looks way sharper than before. Am going to test it out at this sundays race!

Well this new ackerman plate works! Truggy turns much sharper and I get alot more steering off and on power. My friend was telling me how much sharper my truck was turning compared to my friends 8ight-T when he was watching this past sundays race!

Practice raced last night and I'm still having steering issues although I changed the servos. vnmsgt, you mention to tighten the steering servo spring. I asked a few people at the track and no one knew was I was talking about =). Can someone take a pic so I can see exactly where it is?
And if possible can someone tell me where it is I tighten the brakes.
Thanks.

The first pic is of the spring and under the spring is the adjuster that you have to tighten. The second pic is of you have the stock brake linkage and you have to adjust the nut closer on the brake rod. The third is the sportwerks and you adjust them on the adjusters on the end. You have to make the adjust pull the brake rod closer to the servo side to make the brakes engage better.

Thanks... so I have to tighten what I have circled in my pic below? Also, If I tighten too much will it affect negatively my steering servo?
Thanks.

Yes that is what you tighten. It can affect you steering servo if you tighten it too much or all the way but if you get it like I have it you should be ok. I have not messed up a steering servo yet like it is.

a good way to check the tension on your servo saver is to turn on the power to the servos and grab the front wheels and try to move them from side to side like they would move if they were being turned by the remote. If you will watch the servo saver while doing this you will understand what it does and how it does it. If the wheels are fairly easy to move with the power turned on then your saver is probably to soft and needs the spring tension increased by tightening down the collar. I know you probably don't have experience with alot of other cars and you really don't know how it "supposed" to feel. If I read wrong then I apologize. Just make sure to tighten it enough it takes "medium" force to engage it. I think I read a few pages back you were useing ace servos? Those should take the strain of a saver a little on the snug side and you will see MUCH improvement in steering response all around especially in high speed corners. Hope this helps.

i know this thread is alittle old but i am having these probems as well and am going to put the spacer in and tighten the spring thing. what size of spacer?? and do you but the spacer on each side or arm?? and does anyone have anymore steering tips??
vnmsgt
08-13-2008, 10:36 AM
The spacer you put in between the ball end and the ackerman plate. Look 4 pictures above this post and on the upper right of the pic you will see the nut I used as a spacer and where I put it.

ok any diffreent steering tips?? will the stock RTR servos handle the spring thing being tightened??

shouldnt be a hassle for the servo, it will make the steering feel more precise.

ok i put the spacers on but i am having issues trying to tighten the spring i was using needle nose pleirs but could move like 1/100 of a turn everytime. i dont know what else to use......

Doing it that way is very hard but can be done. You might strip the nut though. I have done that before...
Easiest way is to remove the whole from suspension from the chassis. Remove the 4 screws that hold the diff case on to the chassis on the bottom of the chassis, then remove the screw on the bottom of the chassis that holds the front chassis brace to the chassis, the pop off the steering rod from the servo where it connects to the servo saver and last remove the 2 screws at the bottom of the chassis that hold the servo saver posts to the chassis. If you nut is really hard to turn I would do this before you strip it out. Then you should be able to turn the nut easily as you can get you hands right on it.

I used needle nose pliers for mine and was done in minutes. i dont know how you did. the tire is in the way and the only way i can get to it and tighten it is by moving the tire/suspension but then i only have one hand for the pliers not two. im having issues lol. i might just take the wheels and tire off but i have to work now so probably tomorrow.

To get to the tensioner just loosen the lower screw below the chassis and the top one on the brace and it can be slid out to adjust. Also does help to remove the tyres.

RTR ackerman plate is different. It is less agressive. On my fusion buggy, I ran the RTR plate in the center hole and it turned fine for me, too much in the front holes. I know the truggy is different. Move them up to the front holes and see if that helps.....

Also are you still using the stock RTR steering servo? If so then a good stronger servo will increase steering response too.

My steering got WAAAAY better when I replaced the steering servo and surprisingly the Big Bores made a difference too. I use the SX big bores but I'm sure the Caster would work the same.

a good cheap digital servo is a Futaba S3050 (+-$50) and if you have extra $$ the best value is the Ace DS1313 ( +-$70) or AE equivalent.

I bought a mg996 but haven't needed to install it yet. As soon as my throttle servo goes out i'll throw her right in. For $14 shipped it's worth a try. You can get more info by googling it up or the previous model mg995.

Yes, the mg996 is an upgraded version of the mg995. Supposedly it doesn't have the centering problems that the mg995 had.

The TOWERPRO/TOWARDPRO MG 996R's are great servos for BUGGY! Truggy, they suck! I ran 2 of the 996R servos with a 7.4 Lipo rec. pack for 6 months with NO PROBLEMS in my buggy (MBX6).
They will also handle the 7.4 volts withOUT a regulator!
I sold the buggy, & bought 2 NEW Hitec 7.4 hi volt servos. Been using these for a year without a hitch! & these babies will crank a truggy wheel!
